Street Legal LSV | Difference Between A Golf Cart And LSV

When looking at our rental rates, you may notice that there are different prices for street legal and non street legal golf carts. We also often recommend street legal golf cart rental, since most streets around the south Florida area we service – Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and many other areas in between – require a golf cart to have certain features in order to be driven down main roads. A golf cart with all of these features is known as a low speed vehicle, or street legal LSV, and is allowed to be driven on public roads with a speed limit of 35mph or less.

Street legal golf carts are also 4 passenger or 6 passenger electric vehicles – 2 passenger and 8 passenger carts are not street legal, and gas golf carts are not street legal either. Gas carts cannot maintain the speed required for a street legal LSV – street legal golf carts must reach a maximum speed of 24mph, while most gas carts can only reach around 15-18mph. Gas carts used to be street legal, however – that’s why you’ll occasionally see one on the road. Street legal carts now, though, are required to be electric, in order to reach the required speed as well as not give off fumes from the engine.

Street Legal LSV Features

To become registered as a street legal LSV, a golf cart must have the following features:

  • Headlights, taillights, and brake lights. Most newer golf cart brands come with these, though some older EZGO, Club Car, and Yamaha models may not have them.
  • Turn signals.
  • Horn.
  • Seat belts.
  • A maximum speed of 24mph.
  • 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN). While most street legal carts come from the factory with all the features above already in place, they don’t always have a registered VIN, and must be registered with the DMV. When a new golf cart, such as an Evolution, comes with a VIN, all it needs is a tag and title before it can be taken on roads.

We can make your golf cart street legal! All the features mentioned above can be installed on a non street legal golf cart – use our contact page to get in touch with us to learn about how you can have your cart brought to our golf cart service center.
